Higashiyama district in Ojiya City was a settlement called Nijyumurago along with the former Yamakoshi Village, Koshi County and Ota District in Nagaoka City. With its heavy snowfall, this mountainous area was vulnerable to landslides. Terraced paddy fields and ponds created in this severe environment saw the development of unique traditional culture of nishikigoi carp farming and bullfighting using bulls for farming.
